Church Life: Our Quest for Biblical Christianity

Elder Michael Gowens

A Passion for Holiness

Because of the devastating power of sin and the dishonor it brings to the Lord, we desire to assist one another to live holy lives. Teaching God’s people how to avoid temptation, overcome life dominating habits, control passions and attitudes, and develop godly relationships is an important part of our emphasis.
Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commandments” (Jno. 14:15). Obedience to Christ, in other words, is the ultimate proof of love to Christ. The church exists to train people in godliness. This practical note of admonition (i.e. what God requires of us) and instruction (i.e. the “how to” of holy living) is intrinsic to the Christian gospel. Grace, in other words, is not a license to sin, but the most powerful incentive to godliness in the crooked and perverse culture in which we live.
